At one time one of the largest ports in the world hosting eighty shipyards which manufactured 40% the worlds shipping. This northern city grew from being rural, medieval, cathedral town on the northern edge of Europe to an industrial behemoth which sparked the industrial revolution. But how did this happen? 

Certainly Glasgow is not well placed to be a player in the great scheme of things. But that's exactly what happened. In the wake of the reformation Glasgow awoke to bestride the tobacco trade of North America. This coincidence of religious reform and great wealth unleashed the Scottish Enlightenment and its effect across the world with the spread of the Scottish diaspora.
